New Jersey Legion Family, As the first Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom era veteran elected as your Department Commander, I believe it is important that we remember the conclusion of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which officially ended 16 years ago today. Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) was the official name given to the U.S.-led military operation in Iraq that began on March 20, 2003. The primary stated objectives were to eliminate Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), remove the regime of Saddam Hussein, and promote freedom and democracy for the Iraqi people. Following Iraq's refusal to fully comply with United Nations resolutions and weapons inspection requirements, U.S. and coalition forces launched a combined air and ground campaign. Coalition forces advanced rapidly, and Baghdad fell within three weeks of the invasion. Saddam Hussein's government was removed from power, marking a swift military victory for coalition forces. On May 1, 2003, President George W. Bush announced the end of major combat operations aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. However, the conflict continued as coalition forces faced a growing insurgency, sectarian violence, and ongoing security challenges throughout Iraq. Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded on August 31, 2010, when President Barack Obama announced the end of the U.S. combat mission in Iraq and the transition to Operation New Dawn, a non-combat advisory and assistance mission. The remaining U.S. military forces withdrew from Iraq in December 2011. While OIF achieved its immediate military objectives, the years that followed brought complex political, security, and humanitarian challenges that would continue to shape the region for years to come. Today, as we reflect on this chapter in our nation's history, we also recognize the men and women who answered the call to serve during the Gulf War and Global War on Terror eras. NJ Legion Family, On August 29, 2026, we proudly celebrate the 110th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The United States Marine Corps Reserve was established on August 29, 1916, through the Naval Appropriations Act signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson, creating a force of trained Marines ready to reinforce and support the active-duty Marine Corps whenever called upon. For 110 years, Marine Reservists have faithfully balanced civilian careers, education, family responsibilities, and military obligations while maintaining the highest standards of readiness, discipline, and service to our Nation. The Marine Corps Reserve has played a vital role in major conflicts and contingency operations, providing highly trained Marines who have answered the call to serve whenever and wherever needed. Through monthly drills, annual training, mobilizations, deployments, and humanitarian missions, Marine Reservists continue to demonstrate the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment while standing ready to defend the freedoms we hold dear. Their selfless service and unwavering dedication strengthen our national defense while enriching the communities in which they live and work. Women's Equality Day NJ American Legion Family, Throughout our nation's history, we have continually worked toward creating a more perfect Union. Today, on Women's Equality Day, we commemorate a landmark achievement in that journey toward equality and justice. The ratification of the 19th Amendment secured women's constitutional right to vote after a decades-long suffrage movement and stands as one of the most significant expansions of democratic rights in American history. The amendment prohibited the United States and the states from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex, forever transforming the American electorate and strengthening our democracy. It was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, ratified by the states on August 18, 1920, and officially certified on August 26, 1920. The path to this victory was neither quick nor easy. Generations of determined women organized, petitioned, marched, and advocated for equal representation. Their perseverance changed our nation and opened doors for future generations of Americans. While the 19th Amendment was a monumental achievement, it did not immediately guarantee equal voting access for all women. Many African American women, Native American women, Asian American women, and other minority women continued to face discriminatory barriers for decades. Their continued struggle reminds us that the pursuit of equality requires constant vigilance, courage, and commitment.
