Department Commander Larry Bishop 2023-2024

Bio

Larry Bishop, a resident of Sayreville, New Jersey, was elected New Jersey State Commander of The American Legion at its 104^th Convention held in Wildwood, New Jersey on Friday, June 9^th, 2023.

Commander Bishop served two years in the United States Army, being drafted April 24, 1969, and discharged April 23, 1971. He attended Basic Training (BT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was assigned to For Myers, Virginia for six months and then to Fort Totten, New York in the United States Courier Service for the remainder of his duty.

He is a 35-year member of Sayreville American Legion Post 211, Sayreville, Middlesex County and will lead the State's largest wartime VETERANS' ORGANIZATION WITH A MEMBERSHIP OF APPROXIMATELY 35,000 for the next year. Commander Bishop has held several offices at the Post, County, and Department levels, including Post Commander, County Commander, Department Executive Committeeman, and Department Vice-Commander twice (2016-2017 / 2017-2018).
